After Newport Harbor Yacht Club (NHYC) canceled the 2025 edition of their biennial yacht race from Newport Beach to Cabo San Lucas, BCS, Mexico due to finish port logistics, they have revealed their Plan B – an offshore race around the numerous Southern California Channel Islands of approximately 500 nautical miles.
Using the Offshore Racing Rule (ORR) rating system, the race is expected to draw competitors who may also be competing in the 2025 Transpacific Yacht Race that starts in July and extends 2250nm from Los Angeles to Honolulu. The Channel Islands 500 will have a minimum of a 2-night offshore course that is intended to be a Transpac qualifier.
Starting with a full moon on March 14, the course begins in Santa Barbara and will have virtual rounding marks before an offshore virtual finish line between San Clemente Island and San Diego. The race will include reaching and downwind legs that resemble the first few cold days of Transpac, with the course selected from several options depending on forecasted wind conditions.
US Safety Equipment Requirements for Ocean Races and AIS will be required to compete. A Notice of Race will be issued by November 1, 2024.
