Respected Maltese Diving Instructor Dies After Cirkewwa Incident

A 59-year-old diver has passed away following injuries sustained in a diving accident at Cirkewwa, Malta, early on Sunday. His death was confirmed at Mater Dei Hospital on Tuesday morning, according to a report in Times of Malta.

The diver has been identified as Dione Galdes, an experienced instructor from Iklin who was highly regarded within the local diving scene. Galdes was widely known for his calm demeanor, generosity with his time, and deep commitment to diver education and safety.

Over the years, Galdes supported the Maltese diving community through mentorship, technical training, and active involvement in local dive clubs. He played a key role in training countless divers, many of whom took their first breaths underwater under his guidance.

An investigation into the incident is currently being led by Magistrate Ian Farrugia.
