Colorado Tourist Dies After Scuba Lesson in Hawaii

A 51-year-old man from Colorado passed away following a scuba diving session with family at Waiolena Beach Park in Hilo, Hawai‘i on June 30, according to local authorities.

Greg Durocher, a resident of Castle Rock, Colorado, had spent approximately 40 minutes in the water during the scuba activity before returning to shore and reporting breathing difficulties. Shortly thereafter, he became unresponsive.

Immediate efforts to revive him were made by his family and the dive instructor, with emergency medical personnel taking over once on scene. Despite these efforts, Durocher was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

Police have stated there is no suspicion of foul play. A coroner’s inquest has been initiated to determine the official cause of death.

Waiolena Beach Park is a popular dive entry point on the eastern side of the Big Island, known for its coastal lava rock formations and marine life.
